Ocean Freight Specialist – Houston, TX

A leading global provider of logistics and transportation is seeking an Ocean Freight Specialist to join their team. 

In this role, you will manage and process ocean export/import transactions for major accounts, ensuring compliance with all regulatory guidelines.

What You’ll Be Doing:
  • Promote a positive relationship with clients by ensuring excellent, timely, and proactive customer service.
  • Communicate with carriers, overseas agents, and customers via telephone and email to process shipments.
  • Handle booking requests and export customer service calls.
  • Ensure current buying/selling rates are set up for every export shipment.
  • Complete export and import documentation and send pre-alerts.
  • Request necessary documents from the shipper, including power of attorney, commercial invoice, packing list, insurance certificate, and SLI.
  • Verify shipments in the warehouse to ensure shipping documents correspond 
  • Create quotations for individual shipments, estimate prices for shippers, and select appropriate transportation companies.
  • Review standard operating procedures to ensure compliance with all regulations, TSA, ISO.
  • Receive, review, and process high-volume and/or complex import and export transactions for clients, including booking, documentation, and billing.
  • Process data through the company’s system 
  • Process bills of lading for outgoing shipments.
  • Track and review shipping status 
  • Ensure shipments of hazardous materials are checked and processed in accordance with all applicable regulations 

What We’re Looking For:
  • Prior experience in a freight forwarding/logistics environment 
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • A collaborative team player with a high level of customer service orientation.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of government regulations including but not limited to TSA, CBP, ITAR, and EAR.
  • Hazardous materials training in accordance with regulations.
  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
