Alchemy is partnered with an International auction house who are seeking a Head of Department for their Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art department.
The idea candidate for this position will have great knowledge of the Chinese Works of Art market and specialism in this field within auction house or similar environment.
This is a Leadership position to manage the department 3600 whilst also personally consigning, selling the sale and being accountable for departmental budget.
The Department Head will work closely with Asia countries heads to drive the buy and sell.

In your role as Head of Department you will be required to carry out the following:

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Manage and mentor the team, leading by direction and example and ensure the efficiency of the team.
Work with the international Chinese art team, manage, direct, and prioritise the work and tasks allocated to team members.
Plan and assist the team with business getting in Asia and Australia.
Direct and coordinate valuations to customers including sale and insurance valuations.
Ensure the highest level of professionalism with regard to correct dating and descriptions of the objects, estimates and presentation.
Make sure that customers receive swift professional and efficient service.
Ensure customers’ property is handled and stored safely, professionally, and efficiently.
Produce sale catalogues, direct and assist with research and preparation of the catalogues layout and objects included in the sale and ensure printing, distribution and sale deadlines are met.
Coordinate all sale processes and requirements and ensure the department meets all the contractual obligations to both buyers and vendors.
Manage the budgeting of the Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art Department and effectively use the expenditure in such a way to bring the most benefits.
Maintain and exceed budgeted commission levels.
Demonstrate your specialism of Chinese ceramics and works of Art and share this knowledge with your team.
Maintain and develop relationships with collectors, dealers and individuals with known collections of Chinese Works of Art.
Coordinate marketing, advertising, press releases through all media channels including printed matter, website, internet and social media.
Coordinate the international preview exhibitions for the department and the Hong Kong sale exhibition.
Network and actively pursue new business opportunities for the department.
Develop the database of buyers and vendors, with a focus on residents in Asia, including detailed annotations of high value objects owned by these customers.
Foster good relations with trade and professional bodies to assist with the advancement of the department.

Required Skills

Proven experience in the Chinese Ceramics & Works of Art specialty field and/or in the auction industry.
Relationships with established dealers and collectors in the field.
Strong written and verbal communication and networking skills.
Detail-oriented, well-organized manager.
Ability to prioritise and meet strict scheduled deadlines.
Computer proficient.
Ability to travel as necessary to achieve goals
